Education Officer's Word

2020 was, without a doubt, a very challenging year for all of us in all fields. The COVID-19 pandemic changed the course of almost everything we do, and this was no different within AO Spine.

Although our current projects have been evolving, much has been disrupted by the impossibility to carry out face-to-face activities. Had it been possible, a Global Spine Congress would have been held in Rio de Janeiro. However, we strive to learn from hardship and remained focused, leveraging our strengths.

Our online activities were as active as ever, with a record number of participants (2905) in 20 webinars throughout the year. In order to offer our community the widest range of options during these uncertain times, we seek to evolve through new, more interactive formats and new educational tools as well as improve those which are already our hallmarks. We were also able to finalize a more structured educational framework for web-based events which enables the sequencing of these activities and provides a progressive learning curve in the various areas of spinal pathologies.

With so many online events taking place, AO Spine developed a pioneer faculty training program called Digital Education Training (DET). The pilot program was a cross-division experience, as faculty from AO Trauma and AO Spine were invited to join this challenging project tailored to faculty’s needs and aimed to improve their online performance in their educational roles.

Let us not forget our Continuing Education Program (our regional diploma), which had a second call for registration as, due to the pandemic, AO Spine understood the need for promotion at a regional level of flexible, high quality learning processes.

The Hospital Based Seminars (HBS) were also adapted to an online format, becoming a very attractive educational offer. The commitment of colleagues from all over our region helped to maintain and foster the educational proposal for residents and fellows. During last year we held 40 hospital-based seminars, 37 of which were online (29 were originally planned as face-to-face events). We would also like to thank our HBS task force members and highlight their effort and commitment. They worked very diligently this year on creating and improving scientific material for this event format.

We were also able to participate and hold online sessions in two national societies’ virtual congress, keeping close contact with these entities and promoting our unique teaching model.

We have made progress in finalizing the curriculum for our specimen courses and simulation courses (Hospital Based Courses), which were expected to be launched this year, but have been postponed until further notice.

We continue to learn and to maintain our educational proposal in order to retain leadership in our region. We believe 2021 will be brighter and we will be able to keep sharing even more experiences and knowledge.

Educational activities

Based on the philosophy of lifelong learning, every year AO Spine provides over 200 educational opportunities to over 13,000 spine surgeons and spine specialists worldwide. AO Spine events are based on regular needs and are organized locally, regionally, globally, and virtually. Learning is more and more blended, combining online learning modules at your own pace with hands-on in-person training courses and introducing virtual and augmented reality.
When almost the whole world went into lockdown due to the COVID-19 pandemic, events had to start to work very differently. We took the opportunity to offer a better experience adopting virtual alternatives for some of our programs and events. In Latin America, we held 65 educational events for 4,376 participants during 2020.
Get involved and learn more. In the coming year we have planned more exciting activities, always sharing knowledge and learning. And of course, we hope to welcome you at our events next year.

Courses

Training courses help participants build a strong foundation in practical skills in either live-tissue environment, artificial bones, specimens, or simulators. These events are the highlight of our educational calendar, and a major opportunity to master surgery skills. The aim is to equip participants with a practical knowledge base and provide them with tips and tricks for daily practice as well as for complex procedures. The number of participants in each type of course varies from 20 to 50.

Seminars

Events based on lectures, case presentation, moderated discussions and open discussion groups are held in a learning-friendly environment, with educators prepared to lead the discussions. Debating clinical cases is a way of discussing the most controversial issues with the support of factual evidence. These seminars may also take place during academic societies’ congresses. The number of participants ranges from 40 to 100 per event.

Hospital based activities

Events based on hospitals or clinics are an excellent choice in terms of time efficiency, convenience, and educational value. These events may consist in two-day, hands-on courses with simulators, live surgery or live tissue, or half-day case study seminars on a specific pathology. The participant count varies from 20 to 40 per event.

Online activities

Webinars can easily be accessed from the comfort of home and are a fantastic opportunity to capitalize on the presence of world-renowned spine experts and discuss trending topics. During all live events, participants can interact with the Faculty in real-time via chat or directly talking with them (only during the “Meet the Expert” webinars).

Some of our face-to-face courses and seminars follow a blended-learning structure, with preliminary and follow-up online activities. We offer different formats of webinars with Spanish and Portuguese Faculty speakers.

Educational activities statistics

The number of educational activities in 2015 has been strategically lowered due to the GSC that happened in Buenos Aires.
The lower number of education days x participants indicator in 2018 and 2019 is due to an update in the calculation method of education days (now considering half days).

Educational Programs

Continuing Education Program

It is a solid and complete educational program for AO Spine members based on the AO Spine Curriculum. The program is accredited by the Brazilian National Accreditation Commission and certified by University of Caxias do Sul (UCS) as a post-graduate course. The program is organized into two progressive levels of blended learning and has 50 graduated participants since its began.
In 2020, 11 participants completed the program. It remains 171 active participants in different levels, 25 of which are part of the Associate Fellows Program who were invited to join as part of their fellowship program.

Faculty Development

The AO Faculty Education Program (FEP) provides a framework to explore a variety of teaching methods. It concentrates on practical skills and guides participants through the specifics needed to deliver high impact lectures. It demonstrates how to lead interactive discussion groups and helps to effectively run practical exercises for participants. In Latin America, we already have over 300 trained Faculty.
FEP
Faculty Education Program
The FEP is designed to train AO faculty by improving their educational skills, knowledge, and expertise. To achieve this, we give participants the opportunity to explore a variety of teaching methods. This program concentrates on practical skills rather than on theory.
CEP
Chairperson Education Program
The CEP is targeted at experienced faculty members who have an upcoming chairperson assignment and already completed the FEP. Upon program completion, participants can apply the key principles of curriculum design and management. They will base their instructional design on problem identification, needs assessment of target learners, educational methods, evaluation, and feedback. Having learned educational principles and best practices, participants are well placed to succeed as chairpersons of AO educational events.
LEP
Leadership Education Program
The goal of the program is to teach important leadership skills to highly experienced faculty members and chairpersons who get elected to important governance or education roles.
RETT
Regional Education Teams Training
It is offered as an optional module for the Leadership Education Program aimed at specific regional education team members.

2020 New Program

DET - Digital Education Training Program
In a year in which online learning became central to our teaching model due to the sudden outbreak of COVID-19, we took the opportunity to offer a better experience, adopting a virtual alternative for some of our programs and events. This was the case with the faculty development program.
To improve participants’ abilities as online educators and raise confidence in running fully digital education, we developed the Digital Education Training Program. It is a modular training program held in an interactive environment, with synchronous meetings and asynchronous activities, peer-to-peer practice, and one-on-one activities with instructors. This new and unprecedented learning program is a cross-divisional opportunity. In 2020, 24 surgeons from AO Spine and AO Trauma were invited to join the pilot training program.
