Research Officer's Word

2020 has clearly been a challenge for all our activities. The word ‘reinvent’ has come up in most sectors, and the virtual has replaced the presential. AO Spine Latin America did not miss this opportunity and, once again, was up to the challenge, delivering an outstanding research production by many of our members.

First, another instance of the Continuing Education Program in Research was held, in a three-month online format, with active participation of tutors and students, and a high rate of interaction. In this type of course the student approaches the fundamentals of research, learns how to ask the right questions, how to search in databases, and how to consolidate it into a publication.

However, something very important distinguished this pandemic year: the hard work of the members of the four Study Groups. In this regard, remote working was highly productive, and countless studies were conducted, many of them published, others still in review. This was a milestone for our region since no multicenter studies had ever been done in such quantity and quality in the short history of AO Spine Latin America. It is an honor to know that we have such outstanding professionals in our region, and to have the opportunity to interact with them. They guide young surgeons on the path of research, so desired and at the same time not so profitable. A toast to this milestone reached in our region!

Researching, asking questions, seeking information, sharing it with colleagues for discussion, and applying it to our patients’ next therapy is undoubtedly what will distinguish us as professionals before medical societies and before our patients.

I encourage all of you to go further; research in our region is a diamond in the rough. Let us raise the bar.

Congratulations to all, and here is to a successful 2021.

AO Spine Latin America Study Groups

Our research approach helps to bring people together to disseminate knowledge and innovation to promote excellence in patient care and outcomes. AO Spine sponsors innovative studies and encourage our members to participate through open calls and to apply for our grants and awards.

The Latin America Study Groups initiative started last December 2019.
The groups were created to promote innovation through scientific investigation. So far, the groups engaged almost 30 participants.
The goal is to stimulate discussions on specific topics to develop guidelines and research projects as well as to create a network and a platform to connect spine surgeons in the region.

In 2020, the groups developed 25 projects, which already result in 14 publications, involving more than 50 authors.

Research Projects

AO Spine Latin America stimulates research as a tool to capacitate surgeons. The high capacity and good quality of scientific papers in our region show that our efforts have produced good results.

We support our members providing specific tools to help them to develop their scientific studies:

Master’s Degree Program in Health Sciences

The Master’s Degree Program in Health Sciences is a scholarship offered by AO Spine Latin America in association with the University of Caxias do Sul, Brazil. The program is exclusive to AO Spine members and had the two first graduates in 2019.
In 2020, we celebrated the successful thesis defense presentation of André Arruda. His project “Solution blow spinning (SBS) as new feasible carrier to treat traumatic spinal cord injury” was presented online on December, 22:

About the program

The research project must agree with one of the three research lines of the program:
Biomarkers and treatment of spine and spinal cord diseases
Cell repair in spine and spinal cord diseases
Valuation of the treatment of spinal diseases
The program participants are responsible for presenting a minimum of one scientific publication per year referring to and acknowledging AO Spine. They also need to contribute to scientific production and help to create a research center in their region doing pro bono research work in their region for a minimum of two years after completing the program.

Education in Research

Continuing Education Program in Research

The 2020 edition of the Continuing Education Program in Research took place from June to September. Participants from 14 countries had the opportunity to acquire further expertise in scientific publication research, statistical analysis and scientific article writing.

Hospital Based Seminars in Research

In 2020 we held an online hospital based seminar about research with the Hospital Churruca Visca, Buenos Aires, Argentina.

AOPEER

AO Spine members can develop their research skills with the AO Program for Education and Excellence in Research (AO PEER), a platform designed for those who need to know more about the principles of research or want to apply for grant funding but do not know how.

The AO PEER platform is a member privilege, that provides reliable resources and online learning opportunities such as guidelines, courses, e-learning modules, articles, checklists, and templates covering all aspects of clinical research.
